Alta is a city in north-Norway. It belongs to the administrative district Finnmark and is with its 17,000 residents the largest city in this low populated area. The city is located at the estuary of the river Alta in the Alta fjord. Despite the northern location, there is a mild climate in Alta. The people live from fishing and the fish industry. Mining (copper) is especially important as well as the tourism. One of the most important branches of the economy in Alta is. The slate mining in Alta has a long tradition and is also an exclusive export article, which was used at the airport in Tokyo as well as at the border between Singapore and Malaysia. An important difference between the slate from Alta and the one from central Europe is the age. The slate of Alta is more then 600 million years old, while the slate in Germany is only approx. 300 million years old. There are no fossils found in the slate of Alta, because the eldest located fossils are only around 350 million years old.
